Skin Pigmentation: EVERYTHING You Need To Know

Let’s talk about a very common skin condition called ‘pigmentation’: what is it and how do you treat it?

There are multiple types of skin pigmentation but in this article, we will focus on the following 3 types:

  1. Pigmentation

  2. Hyper-Pigmentation

  3. Melasma

All 3 of the above skin conditions can be very successfully treated with laser therapy. Here’s how:

Pigmentation:

Pigmentation refers to a change in the colour of your skin. If it becomes darker it is called ‘Hyper-Pigmentation’ and if it becomes lighter it is called ‘Hypo-Pigmentation’. Pigmentation, often called ‘age spots’, is a very common skin condition and largely caused by over-exposure to the sun and natural aging.

Treatment:

Uneven skin tone, superficial pigmentation and uneven skin texture can be dramatically improved using the Harmony YAG, IPL Dye-VL and IPL Dye-SR lasers.

Hyper-Pigmentation:

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common pigmentation problems in darker skin. Often caused by an inflammation or damage to the skin such as acne, sun damage or burn, hyperpigmentation leaves darkened areas of the skin that can last months or years.

Treatment:

The appearance of pigmented lesions can be successfully cleared using Harmony’s Dye-SR and Erbium Pixel Technology which are extremely precise with proven results.

Melasma:

Melasma is the darkening of an area of skin and is the most common form of facial pigmentation. Naturally darker skin is more susceptible to this condition and it most often appears between the ages of 20 and 40. Melasma can be caused by over-exposure to sunlight, genetics or even hormones.

Treatment:

The Harmony Q-Switched YAG laser has proven to be an invaluable tool for treating and managing melasma. This technology provides a method of targeting both the superficial melasma, and melasma that is rooted deeper in the dermis.
